Every week 6 of our Reading Curriculum is a review and assessment week. I like to let my small reading groups listen to stories on CDs. We have the stories we read in small group on CDs as well as the Instructional Read-Aloud stories. I think it's both fun and educational for the kids to follow along in a book while it is being read. Here is one of my groups at my teacher table listening to a story.
These little cutie-pie girls are in my background group and will be going to my teacher table 15 minutes later. They are writing sentences using their spelling words. I usually let them write as many "good" sentences as they are able to during the 15 minutes.
Kyler is using a magnifying glass to hunt for tiny "CVC" (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. This is one of the literacy centers this week and has 20 different short vowel words hidden. The kids loved this center!
The two kiddos below are writing 5 silly sentences using these cards for the month of September and organizing them according to the color chart. They are encouraged to mix up the cards and make the sentences silly.
Our literacy center time is from 2:00-3:00 each afternoon. The kids go to 2 different center rotations and each day and they go to reading time with me at the teacher table. They also go to a spelling practice center which we call "background group" while they are waiting to come to my teacher table for reading instruction. This time is good for the kids to learn to work together with a partner as well as practice skills we are working on in class. It is also a great time for me to work on reading skills in a small group setting! I just love center time!
