Tortilla day!

This week we have been discussing the book "Big Moon Tortilla". Our theme is "Conflict Resolution". In the story, the little girl, Marta, is doing her homework when she smells tortillas cooking. She rushes to get one and knocks over the table where she is doing her homework and a whole series of terrible events begin. Her homework is blown out the window, the dogs chew it up, and she steps on her glasses and breaks them! We discussed the problem or the conflict in the story and then we talked about how the girl's grandmother helps her solve the problem. To finish out our week, we made tortillas. The kids had a blast! It was a sticky messy mess and I will do it differently next year! (Live and learn - right?) Our tortillas turned out to be a big thick lump of dough, but with some butter, honey, and cinnamon they were edible! Here are some pictures!

Veterans Day celebration

On Monday (the day after Veterans Day actually) one of the grandfathers of a 4th grade student who served in the navy talked to us about the flag and Veterans Day. He showed the students the proper way to fold the flag. Mrs. Kelsey read what each fold meant. It was a good lesson for all of us!

Measuring up to Goliath

Last week, the students' heights were compared to Goliath's height. Goliath was over 9 feet tall. Mrs. Laxton used "foot prints" that each measured a foot to mark off how tall Goliath was. The students came up and stood beside the feet to compare. Here are pictures of the little cuties!

Teal Ridge visit

Right after chapel on Thursday, we had a quick potty break, then loaded the bus with the 2nd graders to go to the Teal Ridge Assisted Living Center. Mrs. Tobey led the students in several patriotic songs to celebrate Veterans Day and then the students sang some of their favorite chapel songs. They did an amazing job. Afterward, the students walked around and greeted the residents. It was really very precious. The students were serving and being "Jesus" to these residents. It was such a successful visit that they invited us to come back in December and sing Christmas carols! Great job 1st & 2nd graders! Mrs. Tobey did an amazing job preparing these students.
